The Jazz Section
(1988)

Inspired by Joseph Skvorecky’s novella “The Bass Saxophone,” The Jazz Section compares two politically repressive regimes and their identical attitudes toward jazz. The narrative bounces back and forth between Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and Soviet era Czechoslovakia and its banishment of the Jazz Section—an arm of the musicians Union.

Performed by Dan Froot, Dan Hurlin, Roy Nathanson, Mary Shultz
With Chris Lindsay-Abaire and Mandy Ross
Premiered at PS 122, NYC
